In 1966, A. Philip Randolph, Bayard Rustin and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. published “A Freedom Budget for All Americans”, which included full employment, fair wages for workers and healthcare for all. At its core, the budget highlighted the ways racial and economic rights are inextricably linked. Six decades later, the budget’s promise remains unfulfilled. President Trump’s federal layoffs, cost-raising tariffs, attacks on affirmative action, defunding of Environmental Justice initiatives, and racist rhetoric are hurting the working class, especially the Black working class. ALIGN looks to the Freedom Budget and the movement behind it as a moral and strategic framework. In our fights to raise the minimum wage to $30 and invest in Green Healthy Schools, we are building multi-racial and cross-issue coalitions to win against pro-billionaire policies and their underlying ideology of white supremacy. The spirit of the Freedom Budget is rooted, alive, and evolving in our struggle for justice. |

Rallying to Hold Amazon Accountable |

We joined Council Member Tiffany Cabán, Amazon Teamsters, NYC Central Labor Council and more to call for the Delivery Protection Act, which will keep New Yorkers safe by strengthening regulations and improving labor conditions at the Last Mile facilities that corporate retailers use to get packages from warehouses to your door. “Last Mile” facilities are usually packed into just a few neighborhoods, bringing pollution, traffic violence, and safety risks with them. They rely on underpaid, unsafe, unstable jobs subcontracted to third parties to evade accountability. This is no way to do business. This month also marks seven years since Amazon cancelled their plans to build a second headquarters in Long Island City, after an ALIGN-led and community driven campaign to ensure no corporate monopoly has control of our communities. Today, the fight continues to protect the health and safety of New Yorkers from the greed of big corporations who are endangering our streets and the safety of workers. |

10 Years of NY Renews |

NY Renews held a statewide convening to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the coalition, bringing together over 100 advocates from more than 50 member organizations to reflect on the past decade and strategize our next steps. ALIGN is proud to have been among the founding member organizations in 2016, building the foundation for the fight for New York’s climate law, or the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. The most aggressive climate law in the country would not have happened without the grassroots power of this coalition developing the law and pushing for its passage. The 10th anniversary comes at a moment of climate and economic uncertainty. At the state level, Governor Hochul and the fossil fuel lobby are threatening to weaken New York’s Climate Law. At the same time, the Trump administration is dismantling our strongest environmental protections. Coalitions like NY Renews are critical when our state government needs to step up, just as it did during Trump’s first term. Our fight continues to protect New York’s Climate Law, and make polluters pay, and invest that money back into New York communities to lower energy bills, create tens of thousands of jobs in renewable energy and building upgrades, and create green, healthy homes. |

This month, the New York State Nurses Association launched the biggest nurses strike in NYC history, with nearly 15,000 nurses walking out of their jobs to fight for dignity and respect in the workplace. Thousands more New Yorkers joined their picket line in solidarity, calling out the corporate greed of hospital CEOs. In a new op-ed published in solidarity with striking nurses, Executive Director Theodore Moore said, “It’s a snapshot of a larger struggle, not just in New York but across the country: corporate greed is tanking workers’ rights, wages, healthcare, and safety, and worsening our affordability crisis.” As a result of their collective action, nurses at Montefiore, Mount Sinai Hospitals, and New York Presbyterian ratified contracts to maintain and improve enforceable safe staffing standards, protect nurses from workplace violence, and maintain nurses’ health benefits. Worker power gets the goods. |
