ALIGN response to the FY27 NY State Budget

ALBANY, NY – Seven weeks past the budget deadline, Governor Hochul and the State Legislature announced a final New York State budget. In response, ALIGN Executive Director Theodore A. Moore released the following statement:

“New Yorkers who are concerned by the rising cost-of-living, an authoritarian federal government, and a rapidly accelerating climate emergency will find little to no relief in the long-delayed budget delivered by Governor Hochul and the state legislature.

Gutting the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act betrays communities facing record high utility bills and extreme weather events — this month alone we saw extreme heat one day and dangerous flooding the next. But with no hesitation, Hochul signed off on changes to New York’s Climate Law written by and for fossil fuel interests.

Childcare funding and a pied-à-terre tax are promising steps forward in tackling our affordability crisis and taxing the rich. We also applaud the $1 billion Sustainable Future Fund, including $150 million for Thermal Energy Networks, to bring green jobs into the state.

Nevertheless, the answer to an out-of-touch government can be found in a growing movement that is discontent with New York State’s leadership. As they operate behind closed doors, the people will continue to voice our truths and fight for a future that belongs to all of us.”
