ALIGN: the Alliance for a Greater New York is an alliance of community and labor organizations working together to create good jobs, vibrant communities, and a more accountable democracy for all New Yorkers. ALIGN is the coming together of two long-standing New York community-labor coalitions, New York Jobs with Justice and Urban Agenda. We seek a talented, motivated, and dedicated person to join our leadership team as Director of Communications. This is an exciting time to join our staff and be engaged in building an ambitious organization at the forefront of innovative policy, organizing, and communications efforts in New York.
Position Description & Responsibilities

An organization-wide communications strategy that builds support for ALIGN’s issues:
The Director will oversee an integrated communications strategy that leverages ALIGN’s position as a credible, well-cited source in the social justice movement to influence policy change and build public support on our issues. The Director will implement a comprehensive strategy that encompasses organizational branding, media relations, digital organizing, and social media engagement. This position will be responsible for developing effective and impactful vehicles for the dissemination of ALIGN’s policy reports, opinion pieces, and other media tools for shifting the public discourse, and will constantly evaluate and adapt those approaches to meet organizational goals. The Director will be expected to cultivate and manage an extensive media relations network and build and expand ALIGN’s social media presence.
Organizational leadership & development:
The Director will serve as an integral part of ALIGN’s leadership team, helping to shape the strategic implementation of ALIGN’s organizational plans. The Director will closely partner with ALIGN’s leadership team to ensure that communications, policy and research development, and campaign organizing teams operate in synergy and alignment to achieve organizational goals. This position will work to nurture a culture of collaboration, teamwork, and shared accomplishment among staff. The Director will work closely with the Communications Associate and other campaign staff as appropriate. Other organizational responsibilities will include actively contributing to organizational vision, strategic planning, fundraising, and staff development, and representing the organization within the New York social justice movement, our state alliance, and national networks.
Qualifications:
- A commitment to social and economic justice and the labor movement.
- Minimum 5-8 years of professional experience in communications, political, or labor organizations.
- Prior experience supervising and managing staff.
- Ability to independently manage projects from conception to completion and work as part of a team.
- Excellent organizational writing and communication skills.
- Comfortable in a fast-paced work environment and able to quickly adapt to changing needs and priorities.
- Ability to multi-task and work in a deadline-driven environment.
- Willingness to work long hours, evenings, and weekends when necessary.
- Strategic judgment, flexibility, creativity, and initiative are a must.
Terms of Employment: The Director of Communications is a full-time position with health, retirement, vacation, and other benefits, with a salary range of $75,000–85,000 depending on experience.
