Can $60.2 million help transform the region?

Utica Observer-Dispatch, By Steve Hughes, December 17, 2012. When the state’s regional economic development competition was announced in 2011, officials hailed it as a job creator and a game changer. And one year later, the Mohawk Valley already has seen some results from the $60.2 million it received for 59 projects. The regional council approach is a step in the right direction but the state has to closely track the projects’ success or failures as well as the effect on surrounding communities, said Matt Ryan, executive director of the Alliance for a Greater New York, a watchdog group that has criticized the state’s use of tax breaks and subsidies.


Activists Stage ‘Block the Boat’ Protest Against Ship Bearing Walmart Goods From Bangladesh

The Nation, By Josh Eidelson, December 18, 2012. About sixty activists gathered early this morning outside the Port of Newark to protest the arrival of a ship they said carried Walmart goods from Bangladesh. Hoisting cardboard tombstones spelling out Walmart’s name, and garments emblazoned with the names of workers who died in the New York City Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, the crowd declared the retail giant culpable for the deaths of 112 workers in a similar fire last month in Bangladesh.

Occupy Shows Solidarity With Walmart Employees

Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping, and the Retail Action Project gathered in Secaucus, New Jersey today as part of nationwide protests against Walmart and in solidarity with the company’s employees, who have reported widespread abuse and intimidation.


Wal-Mart in Secaucus targeted for Black Friday protest

The Wal-Mart-Free NYC coalition: ALIGN (The Alliance for a Greater New York) plan to protest Friday outside the Wal-Mart in Secaucus, 400 Park Plaza Drive, beginning at 1 p.m.
