Wal-Mart in Secaucus targeted for Black Friday protest

The Wal-Mart-Free NYC coalition: ALIGN (The Alliance for a Greater New York) plan to protest Friday outside the Wal-Mart in Secaucus, 400 Park Plaza Drive, beginning at 1 p.m.


Occupy Walmart: Workers Plan Black Friday Protests

Walmart workers are planning to mark Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and one of the biggest shopping days of the year, with pickets outside of stores and warehouses across the country. Former and current employees of the giant corporation describe systemic abuse and harassment by management at Walmart stores and warehouses. When asked about their demands, many workers talk about the desire for management to respect and listen to the workers. OUR Walmart, a protest group seeking justice and accountability from Walmart, also wants to see the minimum wage raised to $13 an hour and for full-time jobs to made available to “associates” who want them.


Pressure Mounts on Representatives Ahead of Fiscal Cliff

After the Thanksgiving recess Congressional representatives and President Obama will be meeting to try to reach an agreement to reduce the national deficit and prevent the country from driving over the fiscal cliff of expiring tax and activation of spending cuts. The President and Congressional leaders met after a photo-op at the White House on Friday and early indications are that the outlines of an agreement might include a combination of tax increases on the wealthy and slashing domestic spending. But different organizations in New York have been protesting outside the offices of New York’s Congressional delegation to inform them that cuts to social programs and the safety net are not acceptable, particularly after Hurricane Sandy’s devastation.
