Amazon’s TikTok Bid is Another Attempt to Surveil, Monopolize, and Exploit

New York, NY – In response to the news that Amazon submitted a bid to purchase TikTok, ALIGN released the following statement:

“Amazon’s business model can be summed up in three words: surveil, monopolize, exploit. So the news that they want to acquire TikTok comes as no surprise: it’s another opportunity to control a booming retail market and use our data for profit. It would also be a disaster for our free speech, for the Amazon workers who continue to be abused and union busted, and for our economy, as the mega-corporation stands to gain even more power to make the rules and set the prices. ALIGN vehemently opposes this acquisition; our federal and state leaders must block this sale and take action now to rein in Amazon’s monopoly power,” said Theodore A. Moore, ALIGN Executive Director.

Background

  • ALIGN supports the 21st Century Antitrust Act (S6748B/A10323), which would empower New York to penalize corporations for unfair price gouging and abuse of monopoly power.
  • ALIGN led the coalition that passed the Warehouse Worker Injury Reduction Act, which goes into effect June 1, 2025. The Act requires annual safety evaluations of large warehouses and improved training, medical care, and enforcement to address a severe injury crisis in New York warehouses.
