The Capitol Pressroom: July 31, 2013

WCNY, By Susan Arbetter, July 31, 2013. ALIGN: Stands for Alliance for a Greater New York and it is a community and labor organization that is basically working for regular people like you and me. They issued a report back in May, actually, about New York State's economic development efforts, which they equate to a wager – a $7 billion wager – and we have talked about this before on the show. Today we welcome their Executive Director Matt Ryan on the show.

New York to the Nation: Here’s How to Create Green Jobs

PolicyMic, By Mijin Cha, July 26, 2013. A few years ago, Urban Agenda (now ALIGN) and the Center for American Progress released the New York City Green Collar Jobs Roadmap, the culmination of a 1.5 year long process called the New York City Green Collar Jobs Roundtable. The process analyzed several aspects of the green economy, bringing together unions, community-based organizations, workforce development providers, environmental justice organizations, progressive businesses, and others to develop a shared vision for how an inclusive and thriving green economy could be implemented in New York City.

Labor-backed coalition blasts IDAs for lack of jobs

The Albany Times Union, By Rick Karlin, July 11, 2013. I had a piece last week on the state’s annual report about Public Authorities and now the Getting our Money’s Worth Coalition which includes taxpayers, small businesses and unions that have been critical of Industrial Development Agencies, has drilled down into data about IDAs and found what they say is a poor record of job creation.

Cuomo’s Tax Free Giveaway the Latest in $7 Billion Yearly Bonanza for the Rich in New York State

WBAI, By Mimi Rosenberg and Ken Nash, June 24, 2013. A new economic development proposal pushed by Governor Cuomo was passed by the State legislature, without serious debate or public input. It creates  tax-free zones on college campuses for new and expanding businesses.  The governor's "Start-Up NY" program creates more tax loopholes at a time when the state can least afford it, when state and local governments are cutting the services that New Yorkers depend on.

Pulse of The People: Tax-Free NY won’t work

The Record, OpEd, By Lawrence Wittner, June 22, 2013. Should a public university be transformed into a corporate welfare project? That’s the key question surrounding “Tax-Free NY,” a new plan zealously promoted by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, with nation-wide implications.

Under the provisions of his scheme, most of the 64 campuses of the SUNY system, some private colleges, and zones adjacent to SUNY campuses would be thrown open to private businesses that would be exempted from state taxes on sales, property, the income of their owners, and the income of their employees for a period of 10 years

Letter: Tax-free zones bad for taxpayers

Albany Times Union, Letter to Editor By Bill Ritchie, June 20, 2013. The results of New York's many "economic development" boondoggles are in.
The Alliance for a Greater New York reports taxpayers are spending $7 billion on corporate subsidies in the name of job creation.
