Each year at the Movement Builders Awards, we recognize the leaders championing racial, economic, and climate justice and building collective power across our movement. Your support helps ALIGN organize and convene our coalitions, build winning campaign strategies, advocate for policy change, and realize our shared vision for a just and sustainable New York.

Fifteen years in, ALIGN’s work has never happened alone — it’s been built alongside funders who supported us early on, unions who showed up when it mattered, and elected officials willing to fight for policies that put working New Yorkers first. This year, ALIGN is proud to be honoring three people who embody that partnership:

  • Henry Garrido, Executive Director, District Council 37 | As the leader of New York City’s largest public sector union, Henry Garrido has used DC 37’s power to back the policies working families actually need. His leadership was recently recognized with the #1 spot on City & State’s 2026 Labor Power 100, and we’ve had a front row seat to why. “DC 37 has been both a supporter of ALIGN’s work and on the board for as long as ALIGN has existed. From their support of our Green, Healthy Schools campaign, especially the food service and cafeteria workers of Local 372, to their engagement with our Worker Safety Week, DC 37 has been standing with us.” —Theo Moore, ALIGN Executive Director
  • New York City Council Member Sandy Nurse | Sandy Nurse has been a consistent, vocal ally in the fight for a $30 minimum wage and against corporate practices — like Amazon’s outsourced delivery model — that put profit ahead of workers and neighborhoods. She’s the kind of elected official who shows up not just for the vote, but for the fight that gets you there. “Sandy is truly the people’s champ and one of our best allies in any level of government. From her working with us to pass Local Law 99, NYC’s Public Solar Law, to being the sponsor of the $30 for our City bill, which seeks to raise NYC’s minimum wage so that working class New Yorkers can afford to live and raise families here, she has always been willing to fight alongside us.” —Theo Moore, ALIGN Executive Director
  • Mike Pratt, Outgoing President, Scherman Foundation | Mike Pratt has spent his career backing the kind of long-term, unglamorous organizing work that rarely gets headlines but consistently moves the needle. Scherman’s support has helped ALIGN build the coalitions behind our biggest wins, and as Mike steps into a new chapter, we wanted to thank him for what that support built. “Without the support of the Scherman Foundation, who knows where ALIGN and NY’s climate movement would be. From the initial Climate March and the creation of NY Renews to the passage of our state’s Climate Law (the CLCPA) and our city’s Local Law 97, Mike Pratt and Scherman have been integral to our success.” —Theo Moore, ALIGN Executive Director
