An activist group along with the Teamsters and a bi-partisan group of lawmakers are asking the Authorities Budget Office to investigate the way that Wards Natural Science moved some of its operations from Erie to Monroe County, seemingly as their tax break in Erie was expiring.

Wards, owned by a private equity firm, Dearborn Madison Partners, distributes science and lab equipment.

Kristie Barnes, of Align contends the move amounts to “job shifting,” or hiring and firing people in different locales to exploit tax breaks.

That’s not supposed to happen when Industrial Development Agencies grant breaks to companies with the idea that they will create permanent jobs.
