ALIGN urges Governor Hochul, Mayor Adams to Take Urgent Climate Action in Wake of Supreme Court Decision

NEW YORK – Maritza Silva-Farrell, Executive Director of ALIGN and leader in the Climate Works for All and NY Renews coalitions, released a statement in response to the decision on the Supreme Court limiting EPA’s climate regulation powers:

“The Supreme Court once again is overreaching and putting our health at risk. The decision to limit the power to regulate greenhouse-gas emissions is catastrophic in our fight against the climate crisis. This is no time to slow down and deregulate a fossil fuel industry that continues to profit off of climate disaster. Today’s decision only further reinforces the importance for New York to lead and for Governor Hochul to fully implement and fund the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, invest in green infrastructure, and move us toward a sustainable economy.” said Maritza Silva Farrell, Executive Director of ALIGN.

“The Supreme Court decision comes as New Yorkers are once again under threat of dangerous heat this summer, with Black and brown communities bearing the brunt of this climate disaster. New York City must commit to limiting greenhouse-gas emissions now and prioritize the health of our communities. The good news is that we have Local Law 97, a model for our country to cut dangerous building emissions and create green, union jobs. Today’s decision highlights the need for Mayor Adams to move toward an equitable implementation of this crucial law,” said Silva-Farrell.
