Increased protections are coming for New York warehouse workers as the Warehouse Worker Injury Reduction Act was signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul last month, according to ALIGN NY.
The bill, which establishes a warehouse worker injury reduction program, was sponsored by Assemblymember Harry B. Bronson, who represents several parts of the Rochester area.
“The Warehouse Worker Injury Reduction Act being signed into law represents a significant victory for warehouse workers and their right to safety on the job," Bronson said. "This victory couldn’t have come at a better time as we head into an uncertain future for America’s workforce, and as Labor Chair, my priority will always be ensuring that warehouses and all job sites enact safety measures that put the health of our workers above profits."
Warehouse worker injuries in New York state increased by 20% between 2021 and 2022, according to the National Employment Law Project and data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the state's warehouse worker injury rate is 54% higher than the national average.
Worksite evaluations are a heavy focus of the measure, which amends a section of the current labor law.
