ALIGN announces Theodore A. Moore as new Executive Director

Moore brings close to 20 years of movement experience to the climate and labor justice organization

New York, NY (September 26, 2023) – Theodore A. Moore has been named Executive Director of ALIGN: The Alliance for a Greater New York, following a search by the organization’s Board of Directors. Moore brings close to 20 years of movement and political advocacy experience to the position, most recently serving as New York Immigration Coalition’s (NYIC) Vice President of Policy & Programs. The role officially begins on October 2, 2023.

As Executive Director, Moore will lead the state’s most impactful alliance of community and labor organizations and provide visionary leadership to take the organization to the next level of economic and climate justice advocacy. Moore succeeds Maritza Silva-Farrell, who left the organization in February following an impactful 12-year tenure.

Prior to his work at NYIC, Moore was a Senior Policy Analyst for NYC Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, an organizer with the Restaurant Opportunities Center United (ROC-United) and the Working Families Party, and was among the original staff of ALIGN in 2012. Theo is also a founding member of New Kings Democrats and serves as a board member of the Riders Alliance. A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, Moore was born and raised in East Flatbush and now calls Bed-Stuy home.

“ALIGN is so essential because it straddles many worlds as a convenor and connector—climate and labor, economy and environment, city and state, organizing and coalition building—to win transformational change,” said Stuart Appelbaum, RWDSU President and ALIGN Board Chair on behalf of ALIGN’s Board of Directors. “And Theo embodies that spirit with a unique talent to unite people and build power. His depth and variety of experience in organizing, policy, and political advocacy, as well as the vision and levity he brings to leadership, can take ALIGN to the next level. And we’re thrilled that this is a homecoming, too, since he was an organizer at ALIGN more than a decade ago. We thank the intrepid staff and Interim Executive Director Lucas Shapiro, who have done an outstanding job of carrying the work forward during this transition, and we can’t wait to see what the future brings.”

“I am both honored and inspired by the opportunity to step into the role of Executive Director of the Alliance for a Greater New York,” said Moore. “From helping to rebuild NYC after Hurricane Sandy by bringing career jobs to impacted workers to defeating Amazon’s HQ2 bid, ALIGN is a proven and powerful force for good. I am committed to working with our labor and community partners to build a more sustainable New York with a stronger labor movement. Together, we will chart a course towards progress, equity, and justice, shaping a brighter future for generations to come.”
