The de Blasio administration is moving to overhaul the commercial waste industry, launching a new system where the city is divided into zones and one company is tapped to pick up trash from businesses in each area.
A Sanitation Department study released Wednesday found the plan would cut truck traffic and pollution.
Advocates complain about a slew of problems in the current industry — rock bottom recycling rates, trucks that spew pollution as they travel the streets and cause crashes because of safety violations that don’t get fixed, and dangerous conditions for workers.
