ALIGN to City Council: Investing in NYC’s Youth Must Include Climate-Resilient Schools
New York, NY – In response to the 2024 NYC Council Preliminary Budget Response, Theodore A. Moore, ALIGN’s Executive Director released the following statement:
“We applaud Speaker Adams and the City Council’s fight to restore education and childcare cuts. Investing in our City’s public school students, school staff, and working families is simply the right thing to do. But no conversation about the well-being of our City’s youth is complete without talking about flood-prone school buildings, broken ventilation systems, and overheated classrooms — the climate crisis is wreaking havoc on our public school system. It’s only going to get costlier and deadlier the longer we delay climate action, especially for our Black and Brown students and teachers in frontline communities. We have a solution. We’re calling on Mayor Adams, Speaker Adams, and the City Council to invest in Green, Healthy Schools with $600 million in this year’s budget. This is a first step toward securing electrification and ventilation upgrades for 500 public school buildings by 2030, and ensuring zero-emissions NYC Public Schools by 2040. This City is ready for cleaner air, good union jobs, and healthier communities,” said Theodore A. Moore, Executive Director of ALIGN.
